1. Sam Altman, OpenAI will reportedly back a startup that takes on Musk’s Neuralink

Sam Altman is officially entering the brain-computer interface (BCI) arena—and he’s aiming straight at Elon Musk. OpenAI’s CEO is reportedly co-founding a new startup called Merge Labs, which plans to develop non-invasive neural interfaces that let humans control computers using only their thoughts. That’s right—no skull-drilling required.

Still in stealth mode, Merge Labs is rumored to be raising $250 million at a juicy $850 million valuation, with backing possibly coming from OpenAI’s startup fund. Altman is partnering with Alex Blania (co-founder of Worldcoin/Tools for Humanity), signaling a major power move at the frontier of brain tech.

Merge’s mission is ambitious: enable seamless communication between brain and machine, without the heavy surgical baggage of Neuralink’s implant-based system. While Musk’s Neuralink is testing chips in humans, Merge wants to make mind control mainstream—and safe for the masses.

2. OpenAI’s GPT-5 Launch: A New Epoch in AI, or Just the Next Step?

Is GPT‑5 an Upgrade—Or a Whole New Species of AI?

GPT‑5 is here—and it’s not just smarter, it’s strategic. On August 7, 2025, OpenAI quietly unleashed GPT‑5: a turbocharged, multimodal AI capable of interpreting text, images, and audio with jaw-dropping context depth (up to 400K tokens). With boosted reasoning skills, fewer hallucinations, and real-time routing to the best “thinking” engines, GPT‑5 marks a shift from novelty to necessity. While coders are hyped, creatives are less wowed—and ethical alarms are ringing. This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a warning shot to industries: evolve or be left in the digital dust.

3. Elon Musk says X plans to introduce ads in Grok’s responses

Elon Musk has revealed that X (formerly Twitter) is planning to embed advertisements directly into responses from its AI chatbot Grok—a strategic move to boost ad revenue and help pay for the hefty GPU costs behind its AI engine. Musk shared this during a livestream with advertisers, emphasizing that enabling targeted product suggestions within Grok’s answers could provide users with helpful solutions exactly when they're asking questions.

To supercharge this effort, the AI-meets-ads mashup will rely on technology from Musk’s AI company, xAI, which acquired X earlier this year. The goal? To deliver sharper, more relevant ad targeting via sophisticated algorithms.

The plan also includes simplifying ad setup for marketers—Musk hinted that brands might be able to upload ads with minimal effort, while still enforcing “aesthetic standards” so that these in-chat adverts aren’t visual eyesores

Musk positioned the move as a shift from prioritizing AI performance to ensuring sustainability: “Our focus thus far has just been on making Grok the smartest, most accurate AI in the world … So we’ll turn our attention to how do we pay for those expensive GPUs.”

Many advertisers are cautiously optimistic—X claims early improvements like lower ad costs and a 40% increase in conversion rates on web ads—but lingering concerns about brand safety and platform toxicity remain among some marketers.

4. Trump Media’s new AI-powered search engine on Truth Social

 Summary of the Situation:

  • What’s happening: Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) introduced Truth Search AI, a new AI search feature integrated into Truth Social. It’s powered by Perplexity’s Sonar API and currently available in beta on the web, with plans to expand to mobile.

It summarizes how the tool provides answer summaries using news sources and notes that Perplexity’s Sonar API allows developers to select their source preferences.

  • The Verge: Highlights that the tool heavily favors conservative outlets—like Fox News, Fox Business, The Washington Times, and The Federalist—raising concerns about ideological bias, despite occasionally offering fact-based responses.

  • How it functions: Users input questions, and AI delivers summarized answers with citations. Perplexity is responsible for the tech, while Truth Social decides which sources to allow—Perplexity maintains no editorial control.

  • Source bias concerns: Tests show that Truth Search AI primarily pulls from conservative, pro‑Trump sources, lacking diversity in viewpoints.

  • Mixed output: Despite its narrow source pool, the tool does sometimes return answers that don’t fully align with Trump's own statements—like questioning claims about tariffs or election outcomes.

AI Tip of the Week
Take Control of GPT-5 with Custom Instructions & “Think Hard” Prompts

With GPT-5’s new unified model, your results can vary widely depending on which internal sub-model the router assigns to your query. By default, it often chooses the faster, non-reasoning variant to save GPU resources—which can lead to shallow answers for complex tasks. The fix? Learn to steer it.

🧩 1. Tell It to “Think Hard” When you need deep reasoning or nuanced analysis, literally say “Think hard” in your prompt. This nudges the router toward the reasoning-heavy mode.

🗂 2. Set Custom Defaults Use Custom Instructions (Settings → Customize ChatGPT) to make depth your default:

“Always provide deep analysis unless I say ‘quick take’.”

🧠 3. Match Model to Task Not every request needs reasoning mode. For speed-dependent work (e.g., drafting quick copy, brainstorming lists), the fast variant can be an advantage. Save reasoning mode for strategy, research, or problem-solving.

🚀 Example Prompt: "Think hard. Provide a detailed strategic analysis of emerging AI governance models, comparing pros, cons, and long-term implications. Unless I specify otherwise, always use a reasoning-first approach."

 Benefits of Steering GPT-5:

Higher Quality Outputs: Get richer, more thoughtful answers when it matters.

Fewer Reruns: Avoid shallow responses that require multiple follow-ups.

Task-Optimized Performance: Balance speed vs. depth for the right job.

📚 Quick Win: Today, test adding “think hard” to one of your important prompts—and set a custom instruction so GPT-5 knows your preferences from the start.

💬 Your Turn: Have you experimented with steering GPT-5’s depth this way? Share your most effective routing tricks with the team.
