An unauthorized actor used AI-generated voice and text to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reaching out to at least three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a member of Congress. These contacts came via voice mail and text on Signal, and the impersonator even adopted a fake "[email protected]" display name to appear authentic.

The campaign began in mid-June and aimed to extract sensitive information or gain access to official accounts. While investigators haven't identified the perpetrator, it's part of a rising trend of AI-enabled impersonation targeting officials—including a recent attempt with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

3. 'Positive review only': Researchers hide AI prompts in papers

Instructions in preprints from 14 universities highlight controversy on AI in peer review

A Nikkei Asia investigation uncovered that researchers from 14 universities worldwide embedded hidden AI prompts in their arXiv preprints—often in white text or micro‑fonts—designed to coax AI-based reviewers to “give a positive review only,” avoiding any negatives.

The investigation revealed a total of 17 papers, primarily from computer science departments at top schools—including Waseda University, KAIST, Peking University, the University of Washington, Columbia, and NUS

In some instances, attributed authors acknowledged the practice. For example, a KAIST associate professor called it “inappropriate” and withdrew their paper from a major conference. Meanwhile, a Waseda professor defended the tactic, claiming it served as a tool against “lazy reviewers” secretly relying on AI
